Artists Statement
In my first and second semester, I couldn’t throw really anything on the wheel. But, when we learned about slabs, that’s when I fell in love with doing slab sculptures. In my first semester I made a little football stadium and that was the most brutal process, but it was kind of like a test. My craftsmanship was not clean enough for everything to stay together. Luckily for me, the 2018 Winter Olympics were going on at the same time we were deciding on what to do for our show. I instantly thought of the idea of doing stadiums where history was made for the Americans. In women's hockey, they won gold. Red Gerrard won snowboard slopestyle on the first day of the Olympics as an 18 year old. Lastly, Chloe Kim and Shaun White both won gold in thrilling events for the snowboard halfpipe. To make my stadiums, I rolled the slabs and scored and slipped on other slabs in any way that I wanted. Then, I made sure I wrapped them properly to ensure that they would stick together and not crack. I was a big fan of the Winter Olympics so I hope you like my reenactment of the Olympics. I hope to continue my ceramics experience throughout the rest of my high school life.
